This system is used in most Western countries.
Different Age Systems Around the World
Not all cultures measure age in the same way:
- Western Age System (Common): Age increases on birthdays.
- Counting Age (Some Cultures): A person who is “20 years old” may also be described as being in their 21st year of life.
- Traditional Chinese Age System: People are considered 1 year old at birth, and their age increases at the Lunar New Year, not their birthday. For example, a baby born just one day before Chinese New Year will be considered 2 years old just two days later, even though they are only a few days old.
Why Age Calculation Can Be Tricky
Calculating the exact number of months and days between two dates can sometimes be confusing because months have different lengths.
For example:
- From Feb 20 to Mar 20 = 1 month.
- From Feb 28, 2022 to Mar 31, 2022, there are two valid ways to calculate:
- If Feb 28 → Mar 28 = 1 month, then the result is 1 month 3 days.
- If Feb 28 and Mar 31 are both treated as month ends, then the result is simply 1 month.
Similar issues arise for dates like Apr 30 to May 31 or May 30 to Jun 30. This happens because of the uneven number of days in different months.
